Hi Sam!
I'd recommend you to take a closer look at Sony Vegas Studio. It doesn't have so significant bugs like most of other packages. It has a very nice MPEG2 codec. I was able to get a 2-hour video on a single DVD disk with excellent quality comparable to broadband video. Imagine a forest with a number of trees and running people. That's such a good test for a codec! A more advanced version is called Sony Vegas. It is much more expensive. You will be able to use the power of all your network computers for rendering, plus you will be able to customize many settings hidden in Vegas Studio. If you are talking just for home video production, then Vegas Studio will be enough for sure. Get a trial version, it's free, play with it to understand what that is. And let us know here on the forum how it worked for you.
